SCRUBS FOR EPSOM & ST. HELIER
Olivia & Mum Alison
Olivia - I am really pleased to be doing something like this to help, especially as it is something I really enjoy. The NHS staff and other carers are amazing and I’m so glad to have this way of contributing and saying thank you.
Alison - I first became aware of the ‘Scrubs for Epsom & St Helier’ when Denise Donovan posted on our road WhatsApp group, inviting anyone who could help to join. My sewing skills are limited to small repairs, buttons and sewing badges onto Guide camp blankets but I knew just the girl to take on a sewing project like this !
Olivia started secondary school last September and had textiles as her tech lesson for the first term. She very quickly discovered that this was something she thoroughly enjoyed and had a natural ability. She designed and sewed a cushion cover with appliqué koalas on which is now on her bed. Receiving a sewing machine for Christmas, Olivia has been sewing gifts for family and friends. She jumped at the chance to get involved in the scrubs group.
To date Olivia has sewn 16 scrubs bags (including 4 with appliqué hearts on) and 13 mask extenders. I am her assistant. My role is to provide fabric, cut it to size and ironing as necessary. Olivia is now having a go at her first scrubs hat, we will let you know how it goes. I am very proud of her dedication and willingness to challenge herself.
The ‘Scrubs for Epsom & St Helier’ group is so friendly and encouraging and it is wonderful to see so many people of all ages coming together as a community, using their different levels of sewing ability to support the work of our carers. We are loving being part of this group.
